Mountain Shelter Sound Builders

Use sound tests to help plan a trail sound station.

Test a Drum

Listen to the test notes. Use them to answer each question.

A Sound Station by the Trail

A trail club is building a sound station at a mountain shelter. Visitors will try a drum and a speaker. First, the club tests two drum designs. An adult holds the same drum by its edge and gives it the same gentle tap each time.

Design A has nothing on the drum top. Its top moves back and forth, and a clear beat rings out. Design B has a soft pad pressed against the top. Its top barely moves, and the tap makes a short, dull sound.

1.
To vibrate means to move back and forth. Which part vibrates to make the clear beat?
Question 1 options
2.
The club wants a beat that rings out. Which design should it choose?
Question 2 options
3.
The clear beat is ringing. An adult presses the pad against the moving drum top. What will most likely happen?
Question 3 options
4.
A helper taps Design A hard and Design B gently. Why is this not a fair way to compare the two designs?
Question 4 options

Test Moving Paper

Listen to the new test notes. Think about what makes the paper bits move.

A Bowl Beside a Speaker

An adult puts tiny paper bits on a thin, tight cover over a bowl. A speaker sits close to the bowl but does not touch it. Nobody touches the bowl during the tests. The club watches for the bits to jiggle.

With the speaker off, the bits stay still. The adult plays one low note quietly. The bits stay still. The adult plays the same note louder, at a safe volume. The bits jiggle. Next, the adult moves the bowl farther away. With the same louder note, the bits stay still. The club can still hear the note.

5.
What best explains why the bits jiggled near the speaker?
Question 5 options
6.
Circle the TWO observations that together show sound moved the bits without a push from a person or the speaker.

7.
The club will test near and far bowl spots again. What should stay the same to test only the distance?
Question 7 options
8.
A visitor says, “The faraway bits stayed still, so there was no sound.” Which observation shows the mistake?
Question 8 options

Plan the Sound Station

Use both tests to help the trail club choose and improve its designs.

The station has two goals: the drum should make a clear, ringing beat, and sound from the speaker should make the paper bits jiggle. The speaker must not touch the bowl.
9.
Which plan meets BOTH goals in the tests?
Question 9 options
10.
The bowl is far away. The speaker plays the louder note, but the bits stay still. The club cannot turn up the sound. What change should it try?
Question 10 options
11.
Use the word bank to show the difference between the two tests.

In the drum test, back-and-forth makes sound. In the bowl test, makes the cover and paper bits move.

12.
A visitor says, “A person must touch something to make it shake.” Do you agree? Use the bowl test to tell why. You may tell an adult your answer.
