Makers on East Junction Avenue
East Junction is a busy neighborhood in a large city. Along one avenue, three small producers make goods for nearby families. A producer uses materials, workers, and tools or machines to make a good.
At Sunbeam Soap Studio, workers use sunflower seeds and water. An oil press machine gets oil from the seeds. Workers heat the oil with other soap ingredients in a large kettle, pour the mixture into molds, and wrap the bars of soap.
At Corner Crust Bakery, workers measure water and flour made from wheat. A mixer combines them into dough. Bakers shape the dough, and an oven bakes loaves of bread. Workers cool the loaves and place them in bags.
At Little Lantern Toy Shop, a carpenter uses wood from trees to make small wooden cars. A saw cuts the wood into pieces. The carpenter sands the pieces, joins them, and checks each car before it is sold. The wood is a natural resource, while the saw is a machine used to make the good.
