What Is an Iceberg?
An iceberg is a big piece of ice floating in the sea. Most float in cold seas near the North and South Poles.

Where Do Icebergs Come From?
Icebergs start out as part of a glacier. When a glacier reaches the sea, big chunks crack off. This is called calving. Icebergs are made of fresh water.

Why Is Most of It Hidden?
Ice is a little lighter than water, so an iceberg floats low. Most of it stays hidden under the waves. Ships steer far around icebergs to stay safe.
Fact Box: Some icebergs are flat on top, like a table. Others have pointed tops.

What Happens to an Iceberg?
Wind and currents push icebergs along. Icebergs drift for months or years. Seals and seabirds may rest on them. In warmer water, they melt.
