The Peach Pie
1Nadia lived on the third floor of a tall brick apartment building. One Saturday, a new neighbor moved in next door. Her name was Mrs. Park, and she had a fluffy gray cat. "Let's bake her a welcome pie," said Nadia's dad. So they baked a peach pie with a crisscross top.
2Nadia carried the warm pie into the hall. Just then, Mrs. Park's cat dashed past her feet. Nadia jumped, and the pie flipped onto the floor. Her eyes filled with tears. "Now I have nothing to give," she said.
3Dad squeezed her hand. "We can still say hello," he said. So Nadia drew a picture of their building and knocked on Mrs. Park's door. Mrs. Park smiled at the drawing. "This is a perfect gift," she said. "Please come in, and we will bake a new pie together."

The Pot of Soup
1Lupe lived with her grandma in a little yellow house at the end of a dirt road. One spring morning, a new family moved into the blue house across the road. The Ali family had twin boys. Lupe and Grandma cooked a pot of chicken soup to welcome them.
2Lupe carried the pot across the road. A gust of wind blew her hat over her eyes. She tripped on a rock, and the soup splashed all over the grass. "Oh no!" cried Lupe. "Now the gift is ruined."
3Grandma gave her a hug. "A gift can be many things," she said. So Lupe picked a bunch of wildflowers and knocked on the Ali family's door. The twins grinned at the flowers. "Thank you!" said Mr. Ali. "Will you and your grandma stay and help us cook supper?"
