Nia's Slow Walk
Every Saturday, Nia walked with her grandfather to the corner market. Nia liked to hurry. She marched ahead and tapped every lamppost, while Grandpa Kofi strolled behind her with his cane.
"Hurry up, Grandpa!" Nia called. "The best melons will be gone!" Grandpa only smiled. "A slow walk has its own treasures," he said. Nia crossed her arms and waited at the corner.
Then Grandpa stopped by a fence. "Look," he whispered. A spiderweb hung between two boards, sparkling with tiny drops of water. A few steps later, they heard soft violin music drifting from an open window. Nia walked this way every week, but she had never noticed either one.
At the market, the best melons were already sold. Mr. Lee had saved one small melon for them, though, and it was sweet and cool. On the way home, Nia did not tap a single lamppost. "Next Saturday," she said, "I will walk beside you, Grandpa. I want to find more treasures."
