A Letter to Jonah
1Dear Jonah,
Last weekend I stayed with Grandpa Eli. On Saturday it rained all day, so Grandpa pulled a heavy photo album down from a high shelf. “These pictures are from my childhood,” he said. I could hardly believe that Grandpa was ever eight years old!
2The first page showed a boy with a big grin and a scruffy brown dog. “That is Biscuit,” Grandpa said. “She was my best companion. She kept me company everywhere I went, even on the walk to school.”
3Grandpa's mother took most of the pictures in the album. She was the family photographer. She brought her camera to every birthday, wedding and holiday, and she always called out, “Smile, everyone!”
4One photo showed a tall, narrow house with a red door. It looked very familiar to me, and then I remembered why. Mom has the same picture hanging in our hallway at home! I have walked past it a hundred times.
5The last picture showed Grandpa's mother standing on a high diving board. Grandpa said she was afraid of heights, but she climbed up and jumped anyway. “She was courageous,” he said proudly. I hope I can be that courageous someday.
6I can't wait to show you the album the next time you visit.
Your cousin,
Amara
