Ines Revises Her Dentist Story

Turn choppy simple sentences into compound and complex sentences.

Read the draft

Ines wrote this draft about her trip to the dentist. Read it. Then help her make her sentences better.

My Visit to the Dentist (Draft)

1Yesterday I went to the dentist. My dad drove me there. We got there early. I felt nervous. I had never been to this dentist before. The waiting room had a big fish tank. I watched a yellow fish swim in circles.

2Soon a helper named Ms. Park called my name. She led me to a big blue chair. I sat down and held very still. The chair moved up and down. I laughed. It felt like a slow ride.

3Dr. Lewis looked at my teeth with a tiny mirror. She cleaned each tooth. Then she polished my teeth with a gritty paste. The paste tasted like mint. She looked for cavities. I did not have any!

4At the end, Dr. Lewis gave me a new toothbrush. She told me to brush two times a day. I picked a rocket sticker from a basket. Dad gave me a high five. My teeth felt smooth and clean.

5I will not be nervous next time. The dentist was a friendly place.

Sentence types

A simple sentence has one complete idea. A compound sentence joins two complete ideas with a comma and and, but, or or so. A complex sentence has one complete idea plus a part that cannot stand alone, such as a part that starts with because, when, while or after.
