Two Harbors, Different Work

See how natural resources guide industries and jobs.

Read the harbor report

Read about two seaside places. Then answer the questions using details from the report.

A Report from the Shore

Brinewatch and Cedar Shoal are towns on the same coast, but their shorelines are different. Brinewatch has a deep, protected harbor. Large boats can enter safely, even when waves are strong. The harbor also has a rocky shoreline and nearby forests.

These resources help shape Brinewatch's work. Cargo ships bring goods to its docks, so dockworkers load and unload them. Boatbuilders and repair crews work near the water because boats can reach their shops easily. Workers also cut some nearby trees into lumber for crates and boat parts. Truck drivers carry goods between the docks, shops, and inland towns.

Cedar Shoal has broad, shallow tidal flats. Twice each day, the ocean covers and uncovers these flats. The clean, moving water supports oyster beds. The town's sandy dunes and wide beach also attract visitors who enjoy walking and watching birds.

Cedar Shoal's work grows from these resources. Oyster farmers place and care for oyster beds, while shell sorters and seafood packers prepare oysters for sale. Guides lead visitors along the dunes and beach, and small inns hire people to care for guests. These jobs are not the same as Brinewatch's jobs because the two places can use different natural resources.

The towns sometimes trade with each other. A Brinewatch boatbuilder may buy oysters from Cedar Shoal for a community meal. A Cedar Shoal inn may order wooden tables made with Brinewatch lumber. The resources of each place influence what people make, sell, and do for work.
