Plot measurements in fractions of a unit and use the line plots to solve problems.
Part 1: Plot the shell lengths
Lena found 12 seashells at the beach. She measured each shell to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Shell lengths, in inches, in the order Lena measured them:
1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/8, 2, 1 1/4, 1 7/8, 1 1/2, 1 1/4, 1 5/8, 1 1/2, 1 1/4, 1 3/4
1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/8, 2, 1 1/4, 1 7/8, 1 1/2, 1 1/4, 1 5/8, 1 1/2, 1 1/4, 1 3/4
1.
Lena already plotted the first 8 shells. Draw X marks for the last 4 shells in her list: 1 5/8, 1 1/2, 1 1/4, and 1 3/4 inches.
2.
Use Lena's list or your finished line plot.
How many shells are 1 1/4 inches long? shells
3.
Circle every length that exactly one of Lena's shells has.
4.
How much longer is Lena's longest shell than her shortest shell? inch
5.
Lena lines up all of her 1 1/2-inch shells end to end, with no gaps.
How long is the line of shells? inches
Part 2: Tide pool water
Kenji's class filled 8 jars with tide pool water. The line plot shows how much water is in each jar. Each X stands for one jar.
6.
How many jars have exactly 1/2 cup of water? jars
7.
What is the total amount of water in all 8 jars? cups
8.
Look at the jars that have 1 cup of water or more.
How much water do those jars hold all together? cups
9.
How much more water is in the fullest jar than in the jar with the least water?
10.
Kenji pours the water from all 8 jars into one bucket. Then he shares it equally among the 8 jars.
How much water does each jar have now? cup
11.
Look at the line plot. Lena says the 1/2-cup jars hold more water all together than the 1-cup jars, because there are more 1/2-cup jars. Is she right? Explain.
