After the Final Buzzer

Before the final round, seventh grader Darius cleared a space on the robotics team's equipment shelf. "For the trophy," he explained. Their robot could collect foam blocks faster than any machine they had built before. Selin, who kept the test notebook, pointed to three unfinished entries. Each described a run when the robot had dropped a block during a turn. Darius closed the notebook. "We've already fixed enough," he said. "Look at our speed."

During the final round, their robot swept up two blocks and raced toward the scoring platform. Then it turned. One block slipped beneath a wheel, and the robot stopped crookedly against the platform. Darius pressed the controls until the buzzer sounded. Across the arena, another team's slower robot placed its last block. The scoreboard left no room for argument.

Back at their table, Darius pulled the team label off the robot's case. "All those afternoons for nothing." Selin opened her notebook but did not answer immediately. "The afternoons happened," she said. "We learned to wire sensors. We made a program that actually works—most of the time." Darius looked toward the awards table. "Nobody gives you a trophy for most of the time."

As they packed, a student from a newer team asked how they had attached their block collector. Darius almost said they were busy. Then he noticed the student's cardboard sketch, crowded with erased lines. He recognized their own first design. Instead of closing the case, he lifted out the collector and explained where its hinge used to stick. Selin added a drawing from the notebook.

At Monday's meeting, no one mentioned entering another competition. Darius set the loose block on the practice mat. "Can we make the turn work ten times in a row?" he asked. Selin slid the notebook between them. They changed the grip, lowered the speed, and recorded each test. When the robot completed ten steady turns, Darius reached for another block. "Let's see what happens with two."

The empty space remained on the shelf. Darius put the test notebook there, leaving its cover open to a page of crossed-out guesses and new results. "Until we need it," he said when Selin raised an eyebrow. Before leaving, he checked that a pencil rested beside it.
