Westfield Finds a Way Through
Westfield won the girls’ soccer final against Brookside on Saturday, but the winning goal was only part of the story. For much of the first half, Westfield struggled to keep possession. Brookside crowded the middle of the field, forcing hurried passes toward the sidelines. Westfield captain Tamsin Cho asked her teammates to spread out rather than chase the ball together.
Goalkeeper Nadiya Bell remained composed during Brookside’s strongest attack. She checked the positions of her defenders. When a shot struck the post, she calmly directed a teammate toward the loose ball instead of rushing out. A defender’s clearance then sent the ball far from Westfield’s goal. The referee glanced at her watch as both teams moved upfield.
At halftime, Westfield’s coach made a tentative plan to move Tamsin farther forward. She explained that the change depended on how Brookside lined up after the break. The players discussed which passing lanes might open. Once play resumed, the coach watched several exchanges before signaling for the change.
The adjustment helped Westfield rally after falling behind early in the second half. Short passes replaced the long kicks that Brookside had intercepted before halftime. Westfield tied the score when substitute striker Keziah Rowe reached a low cross. Until then, Keziah had been a reserve, waiting beside the field for her chance to enter.
With little time left, Keziah drew two defenders toward her, then passed to Tamsin. Tamsin’s decisive shot put Westfield ahead, and the score stayed unchanged until the final whistle. Afterward, Tamsin credited the players who had created space rather than claiming the moment for herself. Brookside’s captain congratulated Westfield before joining her own teammates. Both teams stayed for the presentation, their muddy uniforms showing how hard the final had been contested.
