A New Route to the Winning Goal
The girls’ district soccer final ended with Cedar Vale defeating Stonecrest, 2–1, on Saturday afternoon. Yet the winning goal was only the last step in a change that started at halftime. Cedar Vale had spent much of the first half trying to force the ball through the crowded center of the field. Stonecrest’s defenders closed those gaps, turning several promising moves into quick changes of direction.
Stonecrest scored first when a low shot slipped inside the left post. Cedar Vale answered before halftime: forward Imani Brooks reached a loose ball near the goal and sent it into the net. The teams went into the break tied. Along Cedar Vale’s sideline, players studied a small field diagram while their coach listened to their suggestions.
Captain Anouk Reyes noticed that Stonecrest’s defenders were gathering near the middle. Cedar Vale’s coach carried a folded roster in her jacket pocket. After halftime, Cedar Vale moved attacks toward the sidelines to avoid the crowded center. The scoreboard remained tied through most of the second half. Families watched from the low stands across from the benches.
The change created room, but it did not produce an instant goal. Twice, Cedar Vale sent the ball too far ahead of a runner. Stonecrest also threatened on a quick break, forcing goalkeeper Hana Voss to push a shot beyond the post. After that save, Hana rolled the ball to a defender rather than kicking it far downfield. Cedar Vale built its next attack through several short passes.
With four minutes left, Anouk carried the ball along the right sideline and passed backward to Imani. Instead of shooting through two defenders, Imani sent a low pass across the goal. Midfielder Selene Park arrived at the far post and scored. Cedar Vale then protected its lead until the final whistle. In her postgame comments, Selene credited the players who had created space before the ball reached her. The match report’s scoring line lists two Cedar Vale goals; the sequence behind the second shows how many players helped make it possible.
